Alex Ovechkin absolutely destroys Hurricanes' rookie in brutal fight

Their first playoff win in almost 10 years came at a cost for the Carolina Hurricanes on Monday night.

Carolina Hurricanes forward Andrei Svechnikov, 19, is in the concussion protocol after being knocked out by Alex Ovechkin in a fight during Monday night's Game 3 of their first-round playoff series.

The first period of Game 3 of the first round playoff series saw some serious action between the two Russian stars playing in the National Hockey League. Ovechkin caught Svechnikov with his right fist, sending the back of his head crashing hard into the ice.

Carolina said Svechnikov would miss the rest of the game with an upper-body injury. Both players were assessed 5-minute major penalties for the fight.

Svechnikov, who had two goals in his playoff debut last week, was helped to the locker room and didn't return.

However, the Capitals still lead the best-of-seven series 2-1. It's a little bit tough because I just heard Ovie talk about it. Brind'Amour said he looks normal but assuming he's out for next game.

A different angle of the tilt displays the gruesome moment a little clearer. Brind'Amour said, his voice trailing off, "but it's done".

Players sometimes get a little too bold and forget their place. We're always careful. This year, we've dealt with [concussions] with I don't know how many guys and when they were ready to come back, we waited weeks after. Monday's bout was just the fourth fight of his career, and the first in eight years. "He's played 90 games, he never fought in his life, I'm pretty sure Ovie knew that". He had one goal and two assists in the Capitals' first two games in these playoffs. So that stuff bothers me.
