McDonald’s will use AI to personalise drive-thru menus

The company hopes to use the AI program to power its customer experience strategy beginning with its drive-thru windows. McDonald's will become sole owner of Dynamic Yield upon closing of the deal. In a pilot program at a McDonald's restaurant in Miami, Florida, algorithms used data such as the weather, time of day, historical sales figures and even traffic information to display additional items to customers that they might be enticed into purchasing.

While the world is moving towards artificial intelligence (AI), McDonald's conduct will help it to sell more fast food to customers to increase the business.

For customers, that might mean menus will highlight soft-serve ice cream on a hot day and a McCafe on a cold day, in addition to items that pair well with whatever the customer just ordered.

McDonald's has tested the AI at several restaurants past year, and executive vice president and global chief information officer Daniel Henry says he expects more than 1,000 locations will be using it within three months. That is, it can be stated that the market approves such an innovation.

Liad Agmon, co-founder and CEO of Dynamic Yield, added: "We started Dynamic Yield seven years ago with the premise that customer-centric brands must make personalization a core activity. We're thrilled to be joining an iconic global brand such as McDonald's and are excited to innovate in ways that have a real impact on people's daily lives".

In its blog, startup welcomed its upcoming tech ventures with its new parent company. The system will ultimately hit all 14,000 United States restaurants and then expand to other markets.

McDonald's has been dabbling in tech for a while now. Ever since Easterbrook took over leadership of the fast-food chain, he has overseen the launch of the McDonald's smartphone app and its partnership with online food ordering and delivery platform Uber Eats.

"This is McDonald's biggest deal in over 20 years". Many observers believe this is a way for the company to attract and recruit younger talents for its workforce.

Dynamic Yield will still operate as an independent company and may eventually use license plate recognition as part of the system.
