Washington sheriff's deputy killed in shooting during traffic stop

Sheriff's deputy Ryan Thompson, 42, was killed and Kittitas police officer Benito Chavez, 22, was shot in the leg and suffered a shattered femur, Wade said.

Authorities have identified a Washington state sheriff's deputy who was killed and police officer who was wounded in a shootout during an attempted traffic stop.

The deputy is the 12th law enforcement officer to be shot and killed this year and the third in March.

A sheriff's deputy was struck by gunfire and taken to Kittitas Valley Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The suspect failed to stop, leading to a pursuit in Kittitas - a city about 115 miles southeast of Seattle. Earlier reports had suggested the suspected had died, but he was alive and under detention in the hospital.

Thompson had been a law enforcement officer for years, joined the sheriff's department in 2013 and is survived by his wife and three children, said Kittitas County Sheriff Gene Dana. The condition of the officer is unknown.

The statement says the vehicle came to a stop and the suspect exited and exchanged gunfire with the sheriff's deputy and a police officer from the town of Kittitas. He started his career as a reserve deputy in 2004 and served as a corrections officer prior to becoming a police officer with Central Washington University Police Department in 2007.

A Kittitas County Sheriff's Deputy was shot and killed and another officer was injured after a driver they were pursuing got out of the vehicle and began shooting, the sheriff's office said.

Ellensburg Police Capt. Dan Hansberry said Wednesday that the suspect died at a hospital.

Kittitas Police Officer Benito Chavez was wounded in the shooting and is now recovering at Harborview Medical Center.

According to police, the suspect left the vehicle and exchanged gunfire with the officer and deputy.

Police have yet to publicly name the suspect.
