Johnny Manziel Will Join The AAF’s Memphis Express

Johnny Manziel is returning to football with the Memphis Express of the Alliance of American Football.

The AAF's San Antonio Commanders held Manziel's rights but declined to add him.

The Memphis Express have the AAF's worst record at 1-5, followed by the Salt Lake City Stallions at 2-4, with the Arizona Hotshots and Atlanta legends both sitting at 2-3. While the team does have former second-round pick Christian Hackenberg on the roster, he's already been benched once, and didn't get into Saturday's game when Mettenberger went down (Brandon Silvers got the call). The CFL said he violated his agreement with the league, but has offered no specifics.

Should Manziel wish to return to the National Football League at any point, he needs to show out in the AAF.

The league welcomed Manziel in a tweet, which he retweeted.

The statement from the Alliance said that Manziel "will report to Memphis tomorrow, where we all believe he'll benefit from the coaching and mentorship of Mike Singletary".

Any success the AAF can sustain through and beyond this inaugural season will be driven by the quality of quarterback play, and beyond a handful thus far it's safe to say it can be upgraded league-wide.

But that game is also in the AAF's marquee Sunday night spot on NFL Network, and Manziel merely being in uniform with the chance he could play will draw extra eye balls.

"The time in Montreal did not work out and Manziel was banished when it revealed he contravened" the terms of his CFL contract and would be immediately released by the Alouettes and barred from signing with any team in the CFL. In 2016, a domestic assault charge against him in Dallas was dismissed after he took an anger management course and participated in the NFL's substance abuse program.
