Jaguar Land Rover recalls 44,000 cars

The problem was first identified by the UK's Vehicle Certification Authority, which discovered a discrepancy between the stated Carbon dioxide emissions and the actual Carbon dioxide output of the affected cars during conformity testing.

Britain's largest auto maker said they will carry out free repairs on the models. It is now working with the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA), which is following up on VCA's work, to "ensure that the recall is administered and managed in line with the recall procedures to ensure the vehicles are rectified as soon as possible", the agency said.

Recalls of cars to fix safety defects happen fairly often, but full product recalls because of exhaust emissions are rare.

For Jaguar it's again the 2.0 litre petrol in the Jaguar XE, XF, F-Pace, E-Pace and F-Type being recalled, and the 2.0 litre diesel in the XE and XF too.

If you own one of the vehicles above and are not sure whether your auto is affected by this recall, contact your local Jaguar or Land Rover dealership. Some Range Rover Evoque models will need new tyres, a JLR spokesperson said. The most exciting version of JLR's 2.0-litre range produces 300hp in the F-Type P300 - although we're yet to learn whether that specific variant is included in the recall.

Vehicle emissions have come under scrutiny in recent years following the Volkswagen diesel scandal, where it was found to have installed software to trick emissions tests.

At the same time, worldwide agreement on reducing greenhouse gas emissions has prompted multiple governments to announce plans to ban the sale of new fossil fuel-powered cars, with the United Kingdom to do so from 2040.

All European vehicle manufacturers are under pressure to reduce the average emissions of their new cars from 118.5g of Carbon dioxide per kilometre to less than 95g by 2021.

"Affected vehicles will be repaired free of charge and every effort will be made to minimise inconvenience to the customer during the short time required for the work to be carried out".

The emissions recall comes at a hard time for the company.
