IPL Spot-fixing case: Supreme Court sets aside life ban on Sreesanth

The life ban on S Sreesanth will be discussed when the Committee of Administrators running Indian cricket meets next after the Supreme Court asked the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to reconsider the punishment handed to the pacer for his alleged involvement in the 2013 IPL spot-fixing scandal.

Thereafter, in August previous year, a single judge of the Kerala High Court had lifted the life ban and set aside all proceedings by the BCCI.

The Supreme Court Bench, which also included Justice KM Joseph, had on 1 March reserved its order on the appeal against the Karala High Court order affirming the life ban imposed by the BCCI. In its judgment, the court points out that the BCCI has refused to lift the ban despite a Delhi sessions court verdict discharging Sreesanth from a crime registered in connection with the spot-fixing in 2015. It's for six years and I haven't played cricket, which was my life.

November 3, 2017: Sreesanth says he will approach the Supreme Court in a last-ditch effort to get the ban revoked. Sreesanth will get the opportunity of being heard by the committee on the quantum of the punishment, the court said.

The BCCI now has a new ombudsman in Justice (Retd ) D K Jain and amicus curiae PS Narsimha, it is expected that the decision will be fast-tracked. It should be also noted that the court rejected Sreesanth's request that he should not be punished by any means, as he was acquitted in the spot-fixing case.

Based on Sawani's findings, the BCCI disciplinary panel, comprising then president N Srinivasan along with the two vice-presidents, Arun Jaitley and Niranjan Shah, held Sreesanth guilty of "match-fixing and non-reporting of offences" under the BCCI' anti-corruption code. The Delhi Police had subsequently challenged the decision in Delhi High Court. The two-judge division bench had ruled that the BCCI ban could not be overturned or reduced.

On May 15, 2018, BCCI opposed the plea by Sreesanth seeking a relaxation of the ban to allow him to play in county cricket in England.
