Saudi Arabia rejects call for global probe of Khashoggi murder

A demonstrator holds a poster with a picture of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi outside the Saudi Arabia consulate in Istanbul.

"Justice in the kingdom of Saudi Arabia operates pursuant to worldwide law and it does so in all transparency", Mr.al-Aiban told the Geneva forum during a review of Saudi Arabia's rights record.

As the Saudi delegation left the conference, many members felt that Saudi Arabia had managed to avoid scrutiny for too long.

Khashoggi, a Washington Post contributor and critic of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, was murdered at the Saudi consulate in Istanbul on October 2.

"We urge Saudi Arabia to tell the world which individuals are now on trial on what charge (s)", Altun said, to lay to rest any doubts that may arise about the "sincerity" of the judicial proceedings in the kingdom.

Previously, Saudi officials have said 11 people have been indicted in relation to the Khashoggi murder and that five suspects will face the death penalty.

Saudi Human Rights official: Brought perpetrators of Khashoggi murder to justice

"We would like to assume that Mr al-Aiban's remarks reflected his personal views rather than the official position of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia - our friend and kin". In an interview with Al Jazeera, Assiri said Aiban's refusal to allow an global independent investigation suggests officials at the highest levels "are hiding something".

"Turkey will continue to serve the cause of justice until Jamal Khashoggi's body is found, the local collaborator (s) are identified, and those who ordered the hit are revealed", Altun concluded, once again emphasizing that the incident must be investigated "to the last detail" and "without being politicized".

Riyadh "categorically rejects any talk about the internationalization of the Khashoggi case", he said.

On the United Nations recommendations on human rights, Al-Aiban said Riyadh was in the process of studying them but that some of them contradicted Saudi regulations.

He said those on trial in connection have had three hearings with their lawyers present but he neglected to provide further information. In 2013, it accepted 151 out of 225 recommendations.
