Rockets Fired from Gaza at Tel Aviv, Explosions Heard

Sirens sounded and explosions could be heard in an Israeli city on Thursday evening, according to a report. Video broadcast on Israeli TV showed two Israeli interceptor missiles streaking into the sky above Tel Aviv, Israel's commercial capital, and detonating.

The newspaper said the Iron Dome defense system was activated and intercepted the missiles.

Israel's Channel 10 news said Thursday, citing anonymous military officials, that one of the rockets landed in an uninhabited area, and that there were no reports of injuries. It would be the first time that Tel Aviv has been targeted by rocket fire since a 2014 war against Gaza militants. But it rattled Israeli nerves ahead of an April 9 election in which Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is seeking a fifth term on the strength of his national security and diplomatic credentials. Israel's military has responded with widespread airstrikes.

Earlier this week, Israel struck Hamas targets in Gaza in response to rocket fire on southern Israel, near the border.

Hamas denied responsibility for the attack on Tel Aviv, saying the rockets were launched when the group's military wing was meeting with Egyptian mediators to try to strengthen a ceasefire between Gaza militants and Israel. He said Israel had no advance intelligence warnings of the rocket fire, which went unclaimed by any Palestinian group.

Since the protests began, one Israeli soldier was shot dead by a Palestinian sniper along the frontier and another was killed during an undercover raid into Gaza.
