"EMS also responded to the scene and transported the victim to Staten Island University North, where he was pronounced deceased". Gotti died in prison in 2002.

Cali reportedly took over the Gambino crime family in 2015, according to a profile in Gang Land News.

The murder reminded Mob fans of the last NY "hit" on a Mafia boss, almost 40 years ago.

On Wednesday, hours before Cali was killed, the reputed boss and consigliere of the Bonanno crime family were acquitted in a Brooklyn racketeering and extortion case.

As Mr. Castellano and his associate, Thomas Bilotti, stepped out of a limousine on East 46th Street near Third Avenue shortly before 5:30 p.m., the police said, three men approached, drew automatic weapons from under their trenchcoats and opened up a barrage of gunfire at close range.

"Cali is seen as a man of influence and power by organised crime members in Italy", US assistant attorney Joey Lipton told the court, the New York Daily News reported at the time.

"It takes a certain type of evil to murder a friend in their own home, and then console the grieving relatives", said Federal Bureau of Investigation assistant director in charge William Sweeney.

But Gravano would eventually testify against Gotti, leading to Gotti's 1992 conviction in five murders - one of several major convictions that thinned the Mafia ranks in the 1980s and '90s.

In 1985, Gambino "capo" John Gotti orchestrated the murder of Castellano to become the most publicized boss of the family. Today's news is a big flashback to those days.

NY media reported that 53-year-old Cali was shot multiple times outside his vehicle on Staten Island on Wednesday evening, local time, by an unidentified man who then fled the scene in a blue auto.

Last week, Carmine Persico, the 85-year-old former boss of the Colombo organisation, died after serving 33 years of a 139-year prison sentence.

Cali had been considered a unifying figure in the years after John Gotti, "Dapper Don", was convicted and sent to prison by cooperating mob witnesses, WPIX reported.

Last October, 71-year-old Sylvester Zottola of the Bonanno family was shot dead while waiting in his vehicle for an order from a Bronx McDonald's.

Cali was first reported to be in charge of the Gambino family in 2015.
