Marvel's 'Shang-Chi' Gets A Director

He's now making the drama Just Mercy with two other Marvel stars, Brie Larson - aka Captain Marvel herself - and Michael B. Jordan, aka Killmonger from Black Panther.

In the wake of Black Panther's massive success, Marvel is expanding its scope and looking to tap into audiences that haven't been particularly well-served at the box office. Cretton previously directed Short Term 12, the 2013 indie that starred Brie Larson, Rami Malek, Lakeith Stanfield, and more.

It was revealed that Marvel was developing a Shang-Chi film last December, though the company actually announced it would make a film based on the hero back in 2005 - once the MCU began taking shape, it appears Shang-Chi was put on the back-burner.

Shang-Chi does not yet have a release date, but with a script in development and now a director hired, it could be coming in just a couple of years. The studio is also gearing up for major releases this summer including Avengers: Endgame and Spider-Man: Far From Home.

Cretton and Callaham are both Asian-American filmmakers. Additionally, he is now directing Just Mercy, a biopic about Civil Rights attorney Bryan Stevenson starring Larson and Michael B. Jordan.

Initially created during the martial arts cinema craze of the 1970s, Shang-Chi is now positioned as a milestone character for Marvel's ever-expanding cinematic universe. I wouldn't be surprised if Larson put a good word in for Cretton with Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige.

Marvel Studios is reportedly angling for Shang-Chi to celebrate Asian and Asian-American cultures both in front of the camera and behind it, similiar to 2018's Black Panther.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Marvel also plans to feature a largely Asian and Asian-American cast in the movie.
