Japan Announces Plans to Send Toyota to the Moon

Even though the amount of energy that can be transported to the moon is limited, the rover will have a range of more than 10,000 kilometers (6,200 miles).

Although Japan has no plan now to make a manned rocket that could send people into space, the rover could be a major contribution to an worldwide space program in the future, the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) said.

"I believe that our industry, which is constantly thinking about the role it should fulfill, shares the same aspirations of global space exploration", Toyoda said.

Toyota, with the help of the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA), intends to allow two astronauts to go for an extended joy ride on the Moon 10 years from now.

Toyota is an off-road specialist brand that manufactures and sells more 4x4 vehicles globally than any other auto company, so it was the logical choice for the new moon rover, or should we say "Moon Cruiser".

Toyota Shows Off Moon Rover Design for Japan Aerospace Agency

JAXA's Vice President Koichi Wakata and Toyota Executive Vice President Shigeki Terashi announced the project at a symposium on space exploration in Tokyo on Tuesday. It's also unclear how such a large rover would make it into orbit and on to the moon or Mars.

The agreement is meant to promote Japanese technological knowhow. And I think that coming back alive is exactly what is needed in this project.

Toyota and JAXA have already been collaborating on the manned, pressurized rover, according to the release. The company has been studying the possibility of making the rover since last summer, but it signed a new agreement this week to accelerate the project with JAXA, Japan's space agency.

Toyota's announcement of the agreement is somewhat vague in its language, noting that the company and JAXA now have an agreement to "consider the possibility of collaborating on worldwide space exploration". Toyota's concept of space mobility is ideal for this mission, he adds.

Toyota and JAXA's concept of the rover has been in the works since May 2018. Going forward, we want to utilize Toyota's and JAXA's technologies, human resources, and knowledge, among others, to continuously solve those issues.
