Gov. Gavin Newsom will suspend death penalty in California

Gov. Gavin Newsom will suspend death penalty in California

U.S. media report he plans to sign an executive order later on Wednesday, describing the death penalty as "inconsistent with our bedrock values". "The intentional killing of another person is wrong".

Kent Scheidegger, legal director of the Criminal Justice Legal Foundation, which has been fighting in court to force the state to resume executions, said blocking Newsom's move may be hard.

How did we get here?

The 38-year-old reality star has revealed that she is working with California's Governor Newsom on eliminating the death penalty in the state.

Newsom's decision comes after California voters have rejected ballot measures to abolish capital punishment twice since 2014.

Ellen Kreitzberg, a death penalty expert and opponent at Santa Clara University law school in California, welcomed Newsom's move.

The president has always been irked by the Democratic leadership in California, including the newly elected governor Gavin Newsom.

Why did he do this?

"I do not believe that a civilized society can claim to be a leader in the world as long as its government continues to sanction the premeditated and discriminatory execution of its people", Newsom said, according to the San Fransisco Chronicle.

Newsom's declaration also included an order to close the execution chamber at San Quentin State Prison and the withdrawal of a new execution protocol.

Most industrialized nations have abolished the death penalty, yet the USA executes more people than any other democracy on the planet. He cites a 2014 study, which estimated that 1 in 25 people sentenced to death would, hypothetically, be eventually exonerated from their sentence if time allowed evidence to arise. He also said that many innocent people have been wrongly convicted and sometimes put to death. "California will not. They won't do their job, we'll do their job", he said.

One of the demented killers Newsom plans on giving the free pass to is Davis, 64, one of the worst of the worst. But executions for more than 20 inmates who have exhausted their appeals could have resumed if those challenges were cleared up, and Newsom has said he anxious that it could happen soon.

"Our death penalty system has been - by any measure - a failure", Newsom plans to say.

No death row inmates will be released, an administration source told Reuters.

A condemned inmate stands in a cell in the yard outside of San Quentin State Prison's death row adjustment center on August 15, 2016 in San Quentin, California. (Who, it's worth mentioning, is the ex-husband of Donald Trump Jr.'s girlfriend, Kimberly Guilfoyle.) California hasn't had an execution since 2006, when it executed Clarence Allen.

The state joins Colorado, Oregon, and Pennsylvania, which have similar bans, and 20 states that have abolished the death penalty, it said. In 2006, Jerry Brown was elected attorney general promising to uphold the state's death penalty even though he personally opposed it.

Newsom may have a point to at least looking into the state's approach to the death penalty.
