Dozens including School Children Killed after Building Housing School Collapsed in Lagos

A lot of persons are believed to be trapped in the building, including pupils whose school is believed to be on the third floor, according to Premium Times.

Emergency rescuers trawled through the wreckage of the disaster, trying to save those still trapped in the building which housed, among other uses, a nursery school.

Sani Datti, a spokesman with Nigeria's National Emergency Management Agency, said officials from the agency and other emergency services were at the site.

The rescue operations are however, suffering hitches, as rescuers are finding it hard to gain access into the building with their equipments.

Children are carried out of rubble in Nigeria after a three-story school building collapsed while classes were in session.

One local resident who witnessed the moment of collapse said there was no warning.

So far, emergency workers had pulled 40 people alive from the rubble, some of them badly injured, he said.

At the site, many people were shouting and screaming. The state government will take care of the hospital bills.

TVCNEWS.TV has gotten reports from its correspondent, Theophilus Elamah who tells us that 12 persons have been confirmed dead while 42 injured are now receiving treatment.

Rescue efforts unfolded in the densely populated neighbourhood in Lagos, Nigeria's commercial capital and a city of some 20 million people.

The same year, 30 people died when a five-storey building, under construction, collapsed in Lagos. In 2016, more than 100 people were killed when a church came down in southeastern Nigeria.

Building collapses are frequent in Nigeria, where regulations are poorly enforced and construction materials often substandard.
