Lawyer sorry for 'tainting' Ghosn's fame with workman disguise

Mr Ghosn walked out of a Tokyo prison on a $9m bail on March 6, slipping past reporters in a face mask and moving closer to mounting a defence against financial misconduct charges that he has called "meritless".

Ghosn was photographed leaving in a white hospital mask, a blue cap worn by electricians, a mismatching uniform jacket, and pants with orange reflective stripes typically worn by construction workers. The disguise has riveted Japanese tabloid media, with one TV show even featuring a reenactment with a man dressed in the same outfit.

Carlos Ghosn was seen outside his residence on Friday afternoon.

Lawyer Takashi Takano said the freaky get-up was a bid to protect Ghosn's privacy, and particularly to avoid media tracking him to the residence where he will live while out on bail. "As a result, my immature plan has tarnished the reputation that he has devoted his whole life to building".

Ghosn left roles with both carmakers after being charged with financial misconduct.

While on bail Ghosn, who had two previous bail applications rejected, will live at a designated residence with a surveillance camera.

The following conditions were imposed on ex-Nissan boss Carlos Ghosn as part of the $9 million (Dh33m) bail that freed him from jail, according to a member of his legal team.

Despite that concern, experts said such restrictions were unusual and even harsh in Japan, which has faced global criticism for the prolonged detention of suspects, who are often held until a trial starts, with defence lawyers banned from interrogations.

Ghosn, who was arrested on November 19 over alleged financial misconduct, was detained for 108 days before being released on 1 billion yen ($9 million) bail.

Any violation of those restrictions could land Ghosn back in detention. He said "by some miracle" Ghosn was able to reunite quietly with his family in his new residence.

"We managed to have Mr. Ghosn's bail granted, but it comes with many strict requirements", Mr. Takano wrote on his blog. He is also known for having studied US law and being aware of worldwide standards in the criminal justice system.

It may be several months before Ghosn's trial begins and his defense lawyer Junichiro Hironaka said the case was expected to run over a "very long time span".

Mr Ghosn, who led Nissan for two decades and was a towering figure in the automotive industry, has been in detention since 19 November past year.
