Chelsea Manning jailed over Wikileaks testimony

Chelsea Manning jailed over Wikileaks testimony

Former Army intelligence analyst Chelsea Manning, who served years in prison for leaking one of the largest troves of classified documents in USA history, has been sent to jail for refusing to testify before a grand jury investigating Wikileaks.

Hilton said, "I've found you in contempt", adding that this will remain the case "until you purge yourself" or the "life of the grand jury [ends]".

Manning objected to every question she was asked and asserted her first, fourth and sixth amendment privileges throughout testimony in a Virginia federal courthouse Wednesday, she said.

"These secret proceedings tend to favour the government", Manning told reporters outside of the court, as The Washington Post reported. "All of the substantive questions pertained to my disclosures of information to the public in 2010 - answers I provided in extensive testimony, during my court-martial in 2013".

Manning's lawyer requested home confinement after the judge found her in contempt, the USA attorney's spokesman said. Her presence before the grand jury this week suggests prosecutors continue to investigate and pursue charges against Julian Assange, the founder of WikiLeaks.

The judge, however, concluded U.S. Marshals could appropriately handle her medical care.

She delivered more than 700,000 classified documents related to the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan into WikiLeaks's hands. During the hearing, the judge would weigh the legality of her refusal to answer questions before the grand jury. Formerly known as Bradley Manning, she declared as transgender after being sentenced to 35 years in prison.

"I have nothing to contribute to this case", said Manning, "and I resent being forced to endanger myself by participating in this predatory practice".

"In solidarity with many activists facing the odds, I will stand by my principles", Manning said.

Manning, who obviously has no faith left in the American government, fought the subpoena, trying to have it quashed.

A document that prosecutors say was filed in federal court past year by mistake appeared to show that federal authorities already have obtained a sealed indictment against Assange. In 2017, her sentence was commuted by then-President Barack Obama.

An attorney for Manning, Moira Meltzer-Cohen (below, at right), said they will likely appeal the order. "I couldn't do this anymore - i can take people i dont know hating me but not my own friends - i tried and im sorry about my failure".

"We hope she changes her mind now", McCormick said. Although the office did own up to the mistake, it did not confirm or deny whether charges were going to be filed against Assange, who is now staying put inside the Ecuadorian embassy in London out of fear of being extradited to the US.
