Been here, done that -SpaceIL sends its first selfie from space

It shows the spacecraft Beresheet, Hebrew for Genesis, orbiting some 23,300 miles (37,600 kilometers) away, with the entire Earth as the stunning Apollo-style backdrop.

Beresheet launched from Cape Canaveral last month and is expected to land on the moon April 11.

The plaque reads "Am Israel Hai" (long live the people of Israel) and bears the words "small country big dreams", alongside the Israeli flag.

The Israeli mission comes amid renewed global interest in the moon, 50 years after American astronauts first walked on its surface. The photo was made possible due to the process of a slow spin of the spacecraft, before it will be pulled by the gravitational force of the Moon and the landing process is to begin.

If successful, Beresheet will make history twice: as the first private-sector landing on the Moon, and the first from Israel. The spacecraft's trackers, which were supposed to follow the stars, failed to work after launch, but on February 24, the spacecraft still managed to complete its first maneuver successfully when Beresheet's main engine was activated.

The lander is the brainchild of three Israeli engineers running a nonprofit company SpaceIL partnered with Israel Aerospace Industries.

The U.S. space agency plans to build a small space station, dubbed Gateway, in the moon's orbit by 2026, and envisages a manned mission to Mars in the following decade.
