Second person in history reportedly cured of HIV

He was diagnosed with HIV in 2013 and diagnosed with Hodgkin lymphoma in 2012.

The details: The patient received a stem cell transplant from a donor with a rare genetic mutation that makes them HIV-resistant. Luckily for him, his donor had a mutation in a gene called CCR5, which is linked with some people having a natural resistance to HIV. That transplant also appeared to clear his HIV infection.

It is important to note a functional cure is not a complete eradicated cure.

The patient voluntarily stopped taking HIV drugs to see if the virus would come back.

Doctors said that recent tests showed no trace of the man's previous HIV infection.

Any story about an HIV cure is bound to stir excitement. "Is that a cure?"

The patient, who prefers to remain anonymous, remains HIV-free to date. That's when it can also mutate to evade drugs. To eliminate the virus, you'd have to kill every single infected cell in a person's body. But HIV drugs have become so effective that many people carrying this infection have a normal lifespan if they take these medications for a lifetime.

Dr. Ravindra Gupta, who presented the findings at the Seattle meeting, said, "I think this does change the game a little bit. It can't grow, it can't replicate, it can't spread - it can't cause any problems".

This latest development is obviously big news for researchers hoping to cure HIV on a larger scale, but this particular case was extremely unique. Thanks to patients like this, we may have a better sense of how to ensure the benefits of the transplant include the elimination of HIV.

Scientists are looking at finding a way to inject a patient with modified immune cells that can resist the HIV virus. But the virus is clever and comes in another form that can use a different, side entrance into cells through another receptor called CXCR4.

Nevertheless, Gupta hopes the work demonstrates the viability of other, less risky, CCR5 modifications, possibly through gene therapy. "It shows the Berlin patient was not just a one-off, that this is a rational approach in limited circumstances", Daniel Kuritzkes, chief of infectious diseases at Brigham and Women's Hospital (who was not involved in the study), told the paper.

The medical story of the London patient begins in 2003.

Brown was diagnosed with H.I.V.in 1995.

"However, this is a long time to be in remission off ART".

The patient received the bone-marrow transplant in May 2016.

Stem cell and bone marrow transplants haven't cured the handful of other HIV-infected blood cancer patients who have received them. The problems cleared up without intervention, though, and the patient was left with immune cells that lacked the protein used by HIV.

"Common to both approaches is the presence of a modified gene in our immune system - CCR5 - that is necessary for HIV infection", Kelleher said in a statement.

Timothy Ray Brown, aka the "Berlin patient", the only person to be cured of HIV, may finally have company.

Still, Fauci is hopeful that such approaches will eventually be available for HIV patients. "If something has happened once in medical science, it can happen again", he said. "So while it's truly aspirational, I wouldn't say it's out of the realm of possibility".

Timothy Brown also known as The Berlin Patient.
