Matt Kuchar defends himself against controversial caddie tip

When the Mea Culpa for Mayakoba finally arrived on Friday night, it came far too late to salvage Matt Kuchar's shattered reputation for decency.

Matt Kuchar apologized to caddie David Ortiz on Friday and said he will pay him the amount he asked for after Ortiz criticized the golfer for giving him only $5,000 of the almost $1.3 million he earned by winning the Mayakoba Classic in November.

It was raining at the PGA Tour's Genesis Open in California on Friday, but the sun was shining for Canadian golfers in Florida.

Ortiz previously told the website he thought he should be paid $US50,000.

'They made it seem like I was marginalising David Ortiz and his financial situation, which was not my intention. I read them again and I cringed.

"I've been out here 20 years.I think people judge me on the long term and know who I really am, and certanily hope that continues".

"My entire Tour career, I have tried to show respect and positivity", Kuchar said. "In this situation, I have not lived up to those values or to the expectations I've set for myself".

"In my mind I had it as a deal is a deal, but after I won the tournament, a deal wasn't a deal", Kuchar said.

While Ortiz is a resort caddie in Mexico's Mayakoba area, regular PGA Tour caddies can demand up to 10 per cent of a golfer's prize money. When he topped the field, he rounded it up to $5,000.

On Friday, Kuchar issued a public apology for statements he called "out of touch and insensitive" regarding Ortiz, and vowed to pay the full amount that Ortiz has requested after Kuchar's win in Mexico.

Regarded as one of the Tour's "nice guys", Kuchar said the incident should not spoil his relationship with the fans. Kuchar said the extra $1,000 was a token of gratitude for a great week.

Reports surfaced recently that while Ortiz was not expecting 10 per cent of Kuchar's $1.3 million payday, he did request $US50,000 from Kuchar. That's where I struggle.

In the golf.com interview, Kuchar suggest that someone persuaded Ortiz to ask for more. "I don't know the best way to answer that", he said.

"I am making a donation back to the event, to be distributed to the many philanthropic causes working to positively impact the communities of Playa del Carmen and Cancun".

In his statement, Kuchar apologized to fans for "not representing the values instilled in this incredible sport" and regretted allowing the situation regarding his payment to Ortiz to "escalate".

"Has any player come to his defense?" he said. Golf is a game where we call penalties on penalties. "In any situation, if you can understand where somebody else is coming from it makes the whole world a whole lot better place, and I missed that one".
