Genesis Open Saturday recap

And when he returned to Riviera Country Club to complete seven holes of his third round before the darkness called a halt to this enthralling golfing day, he was very much still in character.

Woods was referring to the start of the WGC-Mexico Championship in Mexico City, where it will presumably be considerably warmer than it was at Riviera the last few days.

Woods will resume the third round on his eighth hole, the par-5 17th, on Sunday.

Tiger Woods had Riviera rocking with cheers that could be heard a half-mile away, three birdies and an eagle in his opening four holes for his hottest start on the PGA Tour in almost 10 years. Both hit their tee shots on the next hole, wanting to get in as many holes as possible in superb conditions and to keep Sunday even a little bit shorter.

When the round ended, Woods was 10 strokes behind leaders Thomas and Scott and in a tie for 52nd. Ames, tied for the first-round lead with Sandy Lyle after a then-course record 63, had a 68 to keep a share of the top spot at 11-under 131.

Tiger Woods completed seven holes and they were loud.

He started his third round on No. 10 and was five under after his first four holes, before narrowly missing a birdie putt. The Australian might have the only advantage given the week's weather challenges having won the 2005 Genesis Open after the event was shortened to 36 holes because of rain, and officials had to create a makeshift hole around puddles for a Monday playoff.

The pair are playing in the final group and must return to finish the 3rd hole of their third round before playing a further 33 holes.

Thomas posted eight birdies during his second round, including four in a row from 14-17 that were sandwiched by his two bogeys.

"It's a big day, a lot of golf".

Patrick Rodgers, who completed a 67, opened with an eagle and was two shots behind Thomas.

Imagine how he felt when told when the third round was to resume.

"I know that one [under par] is in, so I'm playing the weekend, and I get two more rounds to kind of get after it", Woods said with the confidence of a 14-time major champion.

But he is a shot off the lead after two birdies and one bogey through nine holes of his second round.

After rain pushed his first round to Friday morning, Woods hit 17 of 18 greens in his opening round but had four three-putts and 34 putts overall to shoot a one-under 70.

"If I can have some good (play) in between, it will go a long way". Saturday night usually feels like the end is near. And I make a couple more putts?

"It's not going to be light yet", said Woods, noting that players warming up for a 7 am start on Saturday could barely see. "They're pushing us to get through it. Give us a bag lunch and we're off".
