Shannon Gabriel sorry for comments made to Joe Root

Shannon Gabriel of West Indies celebrates the dismissal of Joe Denly of England during day 1 of the 3rd and final Test between West Indies and England at Darren Sammy Cricket Ground, Gros Islet, Saint Lucia, on February 09, 2019.

With the addition of three demerit points within a 24-month period following his latest breach of the ICC Code of Conduct, for which he received a 75 per cent fine and three demerit points.

It has been noted that Gabriel's comments were not caught on the microphone and the ICC have effectively set a precedent for future charges relating to on-field exchanges between players.

"I don't know who said what to whom.but boy do I applaud Joe Root's reaction here", Hussain wrote.

West Indian cricketer Gabriel was given the ban over a sledge of England's Joe Root that was regarded as homophobic, although Gabriel denied that.

"The exchange occurred during a tense moment on the field", he explained.

Root, in response, was heard by the Sky Sports microphones saying: "Don't use it as an insult. Do you like boys?" "There is nothing wrong with being gay". "There's nothing wrong with being gay".

Root addressed the matter after the day's play.

Gabriel went on to say that he had had a conversation with Root since and "I am comforted by the fact that there are no hard feelings between us" at the end of what he referred to as something he had initially assumed was "inoffensive picong [taunt] and sporting banter" but had since used as a "learning experience".

"It's Test cricket. He's an emotional guy trying to do everything he can to win a Test match".

At the time of the West Indies' squad being announced, chairman of selectors Courtney Browne said: "Shannon Gabriel remains very much in our World Cup plans but with a heavy workload expected in the Test series he will be considered for selection later in the ODI series".

"Sometimes people say things on the field that they might regret, but they should stay on the field", Root had earlier said in the post-match press conference. West Indies have played some fantastic cricket, they are a good bunch of guys and it would be a shame if it tarnishes it. "The battle was a good contest, he's had a wonderful series and he should be proud", he further added.
