David Ibbotson was flying the private plane, a Piper Malibu N264DB, when it lost control with air traffic control over the channel, north of Guernsey, on Monday 21 January.

Ex-England captain Gary Lineker and a user thought to be French footballer Kylian Mbappe have donated to a campaign set up by the family of missing pilot David Ibbotson.

An extensive rescue and recovery operation followed the incident.

The body of Sala was recovered from the plane wreckage on the seabed after a privately funded search, but Mr Ibbotson has not been found.

After a series of search, the plane was found under the deep sea in the English channel after which the striker's body was identified.

Two Southampton fans have been detained by police after apparently mocking the death of Cardiff City footballer Emiliano Sala, during a match between the two teams on Saturday.

Two Southampton fans were photographed making aeroplane gestures during their side's 2-1 home Premier League defeat by Cardiff on Saturday.

The last few weeks have been extremely hard for Cardiff City after the disappearance and death of their new signing Emiliano Sala, who the Bluebirds broke their transfer record in order to bring to the club. However, it has since transpired that the men have also had their details taken by Hampshire police after being detained and now face a three-year banning order from attending Southampton matches.

"The club will be taking an extremely firm stance against anyone involved and intends to ban those supporters identified".

Cardiff City issued a statement shortly after identification was confirmed, saying: "We offer our most heartfelt sympathies and condolences to the family of Emiliano".
