Mosque killer Bissonnette sentenced to life with no parole for 40 years

Mosque killer Bissonnette sentenced to life with no parole for 40 years

The judge said the day of the murders "will forever be written in blood in the history of this city, this province, this country".

The Crown had recommended that the 29-year-old Bissonnette serve six consecutive sentences totalling 150 years.

Alexandre Bissonnette, 29, pleaded guilty in March a year ago to six counts of first-degree murder and six of attempted murder.

The victims were brothers Ibrahima Barry, 39, and Mamadou Tanour Barry, 42, Khaled Belkacemi, 60, Aboubake Thabti, 44, Abdelkrim Hassane, 41, and Azzedine Soufiane, 57.

Huot told Bissonnette to leave the prisoners' box and stand in front of him as he began reading his decision.

"This was a very serious attack in a place of worship".

"We want to appeal to Quebec society to understand us, to understand the pain we are in today, the disappointment we feel", he said.

As he read out portions of his 246-page ruling over several hours, Huot said the attack was a hate crime motivated by a "visceral hatred for immigrants who are Muslim", local reporters said from the courtroom.

A university student at the time of the shooting, Bissonnette appeared to have been seduced by nationalist and supremacist ideologies into committing this "unjustified and deadly" massacre that sought to "undermine our fundamental societal values", the judge said.

In the end, the judge said Bissonnette will not be eligible for parole until he served 40 years of his sentence.

CORRECTION: A previous version of this story incorrectly reported that Alexandre Bissonnette had already been sentenced to life in prison, with no chance of parole for 35 years.

A 2011 legal change allows Canadian judges to hand down consecutive sentences in the case of multiple murders.

Bissonnette also told a psychiatrist that he regretted not killing more people.

"He really backed himself up, to use the expression, " he said.

Bissonnette had a history of mental health issues and a fascination with mass murders.

Following hearings past year, the sentence was expected to be handed down in October, but the judge delayed it to have more time to ponder his decision. More than 50 people were at the Islamic Cultural Centre in January 2017 when he began shooting during evening prayers.

Six men were killed and five were seriously injured, one of whom is now quadriplegic. The sixth attempted murder charge related to others who were nearby in the mosque.

Like the rest of the world, Islamophobia has become a problem in Canada.

Bissonnette's defence team had questioned the severity of such a sentence during the trial, saying it amounts to a death sentence.

In pleading guilty, Bissonnette expressed shame and remorse for his actions but offered no clear explanation of why he did it. "I am not a terrorist, I am not an Islamophobe".
