Carrie Lam wishes all a healthy and prosperous Year of the Pig

Monday, the eve of the Lunar New Year, marks the beginning of the week-long holidays in China. On Tuesday, the first day of the Year of the Pig, Peppa Pig Celebrates Chinese New Year, will hit theaters across the country where it's expected to bring home the bacon, particularly following the release of the most successful promotional video in memory.

According to the Chinese zodiac, 2019 is the Year of the Earth Pig, following the Year of the Earth Dog in 2018. "I wish you all a healthy and prosperous year ahead".

In anticipation, millions of Chinese people have taken part in the largest annual human migration to their hometowns.

Celebrations in major Chinese cities including Beijing and Shanghai were more quiet than usual after authorities previous year banned fireworks due to pollution and safety concerns.

Numerous festivals will feature pigs because this is the Year of the Pig, one of 12 animal zodiac signs related to the Chinese calendar.

Let's just hope for more environment friendly Lunar New Year this time.

On Weibo, China's equivalent of Twitter, animal rights group PETA has launched a campaign to honor the "playful" animal with the hashtag #PigYearDontEatThem.

Experts said people were unlikely to give up on their pork dumplings any time soon in China, where meat is still associated with wealth and status.
