Tiger to make 2019 bow at Torrey Pines

"I played in too many this year".

Tournament host Tiger Woods confirmed today that he will play in the 2019 Genesis Open to be held February 11-17 at The Riviera Country Club.

"We couldn't be happier to have Tiger back in our field", said Peter Ripa, CEO of the Century Club of San Diego.

He tied for 23rd a year ago when no one - himself included - was sure what to expect. Woods also won the tournament in 1999, 2003 and four straight years from 2005 to 2008.

Woods admits he played too much previous year, a mistake he says he won't make again.

Torrey Pines will mark Woods' first tournament of 2018 and his first PGA action since his victory at the season-ending Tour Championship in September.

He's eligible to play the WGC Mexico Championship right after Riviera, then in quick succession, as the PGA Tour moves to Florida, he'll have to consider the Honda Classic near his South Florida home, and the Arnold Palmer Invitational, which he's won eight times and is special event to him because of its namesake. That would make the Masters his seventh event of the season; he played 18 a year ago.

Last year, coming in off his fourth back surgery with an ambiguous timeline, Woods made the cut at this tournament and finished T23, seven strokes back of the leaders who eventually went to a playoff. The win was his 80career PGA TOUR victory and his first since 2013.

Woods joins a strong list of early commitments that includes defending champion and World No. 11 Jason Day, World No. 1 and defending FedExCup champion Justin Rose, No. 6 and San Diego native Xander Schauffele, 2017 Farmers Insurance Open victor and World No. 7 Jon Rahm, No. 8 Rory McIlroy, No. 10 Tony Finau, No. 13 Rickie Fowler, No. 15 Patrick Reed, No. 16 Marc Leishman, No. 18 Jordan Spieth, No. 19 Patrick Cantlay, No. 21 Alex Noren, No. 23 Gary Woodland and No. 30 Hideki Matsuyama. Tournament organizers will finalize the field after Friday's 2 p.m. commitment deadline.
