Trump Promises Changes To H1-B Visas, Including Potential Citizenship

One of the most sought-after visa programs in the US, the H-1B, could see some significant changes in 2019, according to President Trump, including a potential path to citizenship for recipients of the non-immigrant visa.

Trump, a Republican, and Democrats in the U.S. Congress are at an impasse, as refuses to end the longest shutdown in federal government history until he secures $5.6 billion to build a wall along the country's southern border.

The H1-B visa program allows USA companies to hire foreign workers in some skilled occupations.

Donald Trump campaigned for president on a promise to crack down on immigrants, who he said took jobs away from United States citizens.

It was unclear what Trump meant by a "potential path to citizenship" for H-1B visa holders, who already are eligible to be sponsored by employers for legal permanent residency, which would then make them eligible to become U.S. citizens.

Trump has also derided visas granted to family members of USA residents or citizens as "chain migration", and backed a Republican proposal in 2017 that would have slashed legal immigration in half.

There has been no further comment from the President or the White House on what changes could be implemented, or when they may come into effect. "These proposed regulatory changes would help ensure more of the best and brightest workers from around the world come to America under the H-1B programme, including up to an estimated 16% rise in number of selected H-1B beneficiaries with a master's degree or higher from a USA institution", he said. But after seeing Trump's tweet Friday, he said that the "administration has used every tool at its disposal to restrict legal immigration across the board" and "it's no wonder that many companies and immigrants believe that the H-1B program is under siege". Any job that requires workers to have at least a bachelor's degree falls under the H-1B for specialty occupations.

Democrats call the proposed wall expensive, ineffective and immoral.

The announcement of a revision in H1-B visa rules comes at a time when the U.S. government has reached the 21st day of shutdown on Friday, with no solution of reopening the government in the near future.

Throughout his presidency, Trump has sought to stem illegal immigration and to deport more immigrants living in the United States illegally.

Under the proposed rule, companies seeking foreign workers on H-1B visa - under the Congressional mandated annual caps - would first have to electronically register with US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) during a designated registration period.

Amazon: In 2017, the e-commerce behemoth hired 2,515 employees via the H-1B visa program, according to data compiled by the National Foundation for American Policy.
