Xander Schauffele's Sizzling 62 Wins by 1 at Kapalua

Gary Woodland reeled off five successive birdies en route to a second straight 67 that gave him a three-shot lead at the halfway point of the PGA Tour's Sentry Tournament of Champions in Hawaii on Friday. He started the final round with a three-shot lead and closed with a bogey-free 68.

Woodland started the day with a three-shot lead but missed a 10-foot birdie putt on the 18th which would have forced a playoff.

He followed up that opening bogey with a birdie on the third, and added three in a row from the fifth before he chipped in for eagle on the 9th hole to card a front-nine 31. Two eagles that he holed from off the green, including a full wedge from 107 yards.

Schauffele tied the course record with his 62, previously held by K.J. Choi, Graeme McDowell, Chris Kirk and Jason Day.

His eagle putt would slide by, but a birdie would be enough as Woodland settled for a final-hole par.

"I don't think anyone could have lived with Xander today". It's tough as you want to go at the pin and you know there is that bail out right but that's a tough up-and-down.

He'll do the same on Sunday, when he'll be seeking a fourth US PGA Tour title.

McIlroy headed into round three sharing second place with two others at nine-under par and also three strokes adrift of Woodland and while Woodland remains three clear, on the plus side for McIlroy is that he's come from behind in seven of his 14 PGA Tour wins, including the past three, to capture victory. But it wasn't until he reached his second shot at the par-5 ninth hole that he started to consider his title chances. I had killed the par 5s all week this week, which is what you've got to do out here. "It hasn't been there in a couple years", said McIlroy, who has hit 30 of 45 fairways this week. "So I knew what (Schauffele) was doing and the competitor in me knew I needed to do one better and unfortunately I didn't get it done".

Justin Thomas' last round of 65 moved him into outright 3rd place one shot ahead of Dustin Johnson who shared 4th with Mark Leishman and Rory McIlroy, neither of whom could mount a serious final round challenge.

"I did not get the best out of my round as I was five-under through 14 holes and you've got 15, 16, 17 and 18 coming in and you feel like you should birdie", said McIlroy.

The four-times major champion, playing for the first time on Maui, seemed ideally placed to put the heat on overnight leader Gary Woodland but once again failed to deliver in the final pairing, a one-under 72 the worst score of the top 10 finishers at Kapalua.

Brooks Koepka closed with a 69 to finish 24th, meaning Justin Rose returns to No. 1 in the world.
