Chance the Rapper apologizes for working with R. Kelly

The apology came during the final episode of Surviving R. Kelly, a three-part documentary series that outlines the controversy surrounding the singer, who has been accused of sexual misconduct by multiple women.

Rather than steer people away from R. Kelly's music, it appears that "Surviving R. Kelly" has had the opposite effect.

In reality, he has had a support system around him who helped him with his predation. "We've invested so much of ourselves into this man that it's hard for us to let go".

Representatives for Kelly, born Robert Sylvester Kelly, previously responded "no comment" to PEOPLE's request for a response to the allegations made in Surviving R. Kelly and interviews with alleged victims in this week's issue of PEOPLE, on newsstands now.

When the fact that other accused still had their music under the streaming giant's banner, the company chose to revert their radical decision. "The breaking point for me was when Rob slapped me, and he choked me until I blacked out", she concluded.

Smith, in her video, seems puzzled why Kelly's music remains popular.

Following the release of her album in May 1994 - which sold millions - Aaliyah and Kelly made a joint appearance on BET show Video Soul when they were 15 and 27 respecitvely.

Before Thursday night's premiere, a December screening of the docuseries in NY was evacuated after "several anonymous threats were called in", Lifetime said at the time.

In an interview, Chance the Rapper admitted that he regretted working with Kelly.

As a staunch supporter of his city and local community, Chance's support for Kelly seemed par for the course, but this support has been called into question in recent years. The case went to trial in 2008, and Kelly was acquitted on all charges.

According to Lizzette Martinez, who met Kelly at the age of 17 inside of a mall in Florida, she was pregnant by him while she was still in high school.

Former backup singer, Javonte Cunningham, implied that R. Kelly had sex with an underaged girl while others observed.

Kelly has long denied all accusations, and many musicians declined the opportunity to speak out against him in the docu-series.

As both the rapper and the R&B singer are musical icons in their native Chicago, their paths have crossed on numerous occasions: During Chance the Rapper's Lollapalooza set in 2014, held in the Windy City, he brought out Kelly as a surprise guest.

Only John Legend and Stephanie "Sparkle" Edwards were featured, with Legend writing on Twitter that he believes Kelly's accusers and doesn't "give a f-k about protecting a serial child rapist".
