Unions say TSA workers can't afford to man checkpoints without a paycheck

TSA employees are expected to work without pay during the shutdown because they are considered essential.

Now as that shutdown ends its second week, many of those TSA employees are calling out sick for their shifts, leaving some major airports understaffed.

Call outs have increased by 200%-300% at Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport, where typically 25 to 30 TSA employees call out from an average shift according to a local TSA official familiar with the situation.

DHS spokesman Tyler Houlton denounced the CNN report in a tweet Friday evening.

As of Saturday night, KIRO 7 was still waiting to hear back for numbers at Sea-Tac International Airport, but airport and airline employees say they've noticed fewer agents and longer lines.

The federal agency tasked with guaranteeing US airport security is acknowledging an increase in the number of its employees calling off work during the partial government shutdown.

It acknowledged that callouts started over the holiday season and have increased, but said they are causing minimal impact.

TSA spokesman Michael Bilello also tried to quash the rumors but inadvertently confirmed them, revealing that a full 5.5 percent of Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport's TSA force called in sick on Friday - significantly more than the typical 3.5 percent. "That number will get worse as this drags on". As others continue to work without pay, more are calling in sick. Security effectiveness will not be compromised and performance standards will not change.

Over 90 per cent of passengers waited less than 15 minutes, Bilello said.

The president's insistence on funding for a proposed border wall between the USA and Mexico led to the latest government shutdown, which began December 22. "TSA is grateful to the agents who show up to work, remain focused on the mission and respectful to the traveling public as they continue the important work necessary to secure the nation's transportation systems". @spoxdhs & @realdonaldtrump may not like the truth but that won't stop us from reporting.

Every time Donald Trump accuses CNN of promoting "fake news", the network whines that the president is "attacking the press".

Thomas' union represents some 55,000 TSA employees, who screen approximately 800 million fliers a year; he is based at JFK. Democrats, empowered by a decisive victory in last year's midterm elections, have dismissed Trump's demands. But federal officials reportedly believe the "blue flu" - TSA uniforms are blue - has all the hallmarks of a coordinated protest against the shutdown.

If you have a flight to the United States coming up, you might want to give yourself a little extra time at the airport.
