Flat-screen TVs, Car Parts Wash Ashore As Cargo Ship Containers Break

A load of risky chemicals that fell off one of the world's largest container ships into the North Sea washed up on a Dutch beach on Thursday, and more debris was expected to land overnight, officials said.

Dutch media reported that local treasure hunters had found an array of items from containers whose contents had spilled, including light bulbs, auto parts, Ikea furniture, clothing and toys.

The Panama-registered MSC Zoe, which was mostly carrying toys, furniture and auto parts, lost the containers late on Tuesday while battling a storm off the Frisian Islands, an archipelago off the northwestern Dutch coast also known as the Wadden Islands.

Ritzo ten Cate was one of the tourists who helped authorities clean up loose items on the Dutch island of Terschelling after a container ship's lost cargo washed ashore.

The Dutch coastguard tweeted that three of the containers contained, in powder form, highly flammable, potentially risky organic peroxides used in making plastics which can cause irritation if breathed in. Some of the containers are thought to have been carrying risky chemicals after a 55-pound (25-kilo) bag of organic peroxide washed up ashore.

The Dutch Defence Ministry said the loss of 270 containers from the freighter MSC Zoe on Wednesday, some of them thought to contain hazardous chemicals, was one of the biggest incidents of its kind, they said.

Among the goods washed up on the shore were flat-screen televisions, brought ashore with the polystyrene material they had been packed in.

The German authorities are investigating what caused the the containers to fall off as it occurred in German waters near the island of Borkum. "How are we going to clean this up?" an environmentalist on Schiermonnikoog, Cynthia Borras, said. It was built in 2015.
