Windows 10 surpasses Windows 7 to become most popular desktop OS

Three and a half years after being released, Windows 10 has finally toppled Windows 7's to become the most popular desktop operating system on the planet.

The continued adoption of Windows 10 is good news for Microsoft's flagship OS after several months of negative headlines about bugs in the latest Windows 10 October 2018 Update, also known as version 1809. Meanwhile, Windows 8.1 is now at a 4.41 percent and Windows XP still holds on to 4.45 percent of the market share.

The achievement is a big one for Redmond. Apple's Mac OS X 10.14 Mac OS X 10.14 is running on 4.54% of devices, according to the report.

Steam's statistics tell a similar story, and the gaming platform states that 63.79% of users are running Windows 10 (64 bit) as of December 2018.

Windows 10 Microsoft released Windows 10 in July 2015.

With just over one year left before Microsoft ends extended support for Windows 7, expect to see Windows 10 continue to increase its market share.

A cumulative update with the fix for the reported issue could be shipped to Windows 10 October 2018 Update devices later this month. Microsoft later admitted that it would miss the target.

Despite assurances, many businesses who had been bitten in the past, had refused to upgrade, holding steadfastly onto the venerable Windows 7, and there's a fair bet that the majority of remaining Windows 7 machines are in offices. "Therefore, if you need to upgrade before the patch is released, please confirm that you can surely sign in with a user [account] with administrative privileges other than the built-in administrator, before you upgrade", the local company site suggested (translated). Then, when Windows 8 underwhelmed, millions opted to stick with Windows 7 rather than upgrade.
