Apparent Foreign Cyberattack Wreaks Havoc On U.S. Newspaper Distribution

Kollias said there is no evidence customers' personally identifiable information or credit card had been impacted, nor was the information of subscribers, advertisers and online users.

The U-T's Editor in Chief Jeff Light said in a statement online the virus affected the production of the U-T and the LA Times, and the Southern California editions of the Wall Street Journal, and New York Times through Los Angeles' Olympic Printing Plant.

As a result, the delivery of the Saturday editions of the LA Times and San Diego Union Tribune were delayed.

Representatives for the Los Angeles Times said they had no additional information or comment, while Tribune Publishing representatives didn't immediately respond to a request for comment.

"This issue has affected the timeliness and in some cases the completeness of our printed newspapers", Tribune Publishing spokeswoman Marisa Kollias said in a statement.

"We apologize to our customers for this inconvenience", Light wrote.

The computer problem shut down a number of crucial software systems that store news stories, photographs and administrative information, and made it hard to create the plates used to print the papers at The Times' downtown plant.

A cyberattack which appeared to originate from overseas disrupted the publication and distribution of numerous newspapers in the United States, papers hit by the malware said. The problem caused widespread confusion, the paper noted, because subscribers who called the newspaper's offices on Saturday morning were "told, incorrectly, that the numbers were not in service". In the meantime, the newspaper directed readers to its digital editions, which were unaffected by the virus.

Manning said it is likely that Sunday paper delivery will be affected as well.
