Neon blue sky in NY allegedly caused by transformer explosion

The mysterious blue light caused many New Yorkers to turn to social media for answers, including many who wondered if it was aliens.

City Council Speaker Corey Johnson also noted on Twitter that New York's LaGuardia airport was "temporarily closed due to power outage resulting from the ConEd transformer explosion", but was soon back up and running.

CBS New York reports NYPD said a transformer exploded at the utility company's facility in Astoria shortly after 9 p.m.

The incident is under control and no injuries have been reported, the FDNY said.

New Yorkers reported seeing a unusual blue light over the city on Thursday night.

Authorities are investigating an apparent power plant explosion.

"The lights you have seen throughout the city appear to have been from a transformer explosion at a Con Ed facility in Queens".

Meanwhile, some people began sharing their photos and videos of the unusual light on social media.

Locals posted pictures of the explosion and the teal blue sky.

It was the second major incident involving Con Edison in the last six months.

Mayor Bill de Blasio's Twitter account tweeted that an "electrical surge at a substation" caused the light show.

The airport urged people to check their flight status with their carrier, saying "Many flights are departing, some are not".
