Strong winter storm to impact Colorado Wednesday

But for those in the Twin Cities, the snow that'll fall Wednesday will likely be washed away by rain Thursday, which could lead to slippery roads for the Friday morning commute. CNN reports that this affects about four million people, with heavy snow - up to 12 inches in some parts - wind and near-blizzard conditions expected through Friday.

Compared to last year's lackluster winter and poor runoff this spring, numerous basins are reporting good numbers for the percentage of "snow water equivalent" that has accumulated compared to the median.

Winter storm warnings were issued by the National Weather Service, which said to expect heavy snowfall, and indicated possible severe thunderstorms.

During winter storms, the city of Mitchell requires vehicles to be removed from Emergency Snow Routes when the city receives 2 inches or more of snow. However, it will be short-lived, as the snow will transition to rain from south to north overnight.

Meteorologists say the storm will deliver a mix of rain, freezing rain and snow which was expected to cause deteriorating travel conditions and power outages.

There could be a risk of ice forming for those in the advisory area as the storm rotates around and temperatures drop. But the main winter-storm impacts will begin Thursday morning and continue through Thursday night. Road conditions may also be viewed on the Kansas Department of Transportation web site at http://kandrive.org. Widespread blowing snow will significantly reduce visibility.

Once the winter storm moves out, Hasenstein said the area should get a few days of clearing, though Saturday is forecast to have a high of 6. Drivers should also slow down, MnDOT said.

Early next week could be rather chilly as well.
