Delhi's air quality remains 'severe' for 4th day

At least 30 areas in the national capital region recorded severe AQI levels.

In terms of pollution, Delhi's Air Quality Index (AQI) at 4 p.m on Wednesday was recorded at 384 (very poor), against Tuesday's "severe" air quality of 409. In October and November, there are 20-25 days when the pollution level increases in Delhi because of stubble burning (in neighbouring states).

On Monday, Delhi's air quality was recorded at 448 which falls in the "severe" category, the CPCB said.

Leader of the Opposition in the Delhi Assembly, Vijender Gupta, alleged that the city government had "done nothing" to solve the problem of pollution during its stint in power over the last four years.

Twenty-five areas recorded severe pollution levels, while nine recorded very poor air quality, the CPCB data showed.

According to the state-run SAFAR, a thick blanket of smog engulfed the region on Tuesday morning as the air quality plummeted to the hazardous category with 423 in the morning.

Delhi's air quality had turned "severe" on Saturday.

Traffic police was suggested to ensure smooth flow of traffic.

"But the good news is that speed of surface wind has improved, which may help in dispersing the pollutants", he said. The index was 5500 sqm/second Wednesday, the IITM said.

Agencies have been also asked to intensify ground actions and make all efforts to control polluting activities, particularly waste burning.

At Lodhi road, the AQI (Air Quality Index) was 315 with PM (Particulate Matter) 2.5 at 8.30 am.

According to media reports Kejriwal said, "We're taking a number of steps like tree-plantation drives and buying 3,000 buses etc".

In light of this and the expected weather conditions for the coming few days, the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) task force has made these recommendations, which, the EPCA directs, should urgently be complied with, he said.

Union Environment Minister Harsh Vardhan on Monday said no leniency would be shown to those violating pollution control norms.

Delhi's air quality remained in the "severe" category for the fourth consecutive day Tuesday as meteorological conditions continued to be unfavourable for dispersion of pollutants.

Dahiya also said the government should immediately close down schools and urge people to curtail outdoor activities given the serious health effects of the current pollution levels.

In NCR, Ghaziabad recorded severe air quality while Faridabad, Gurgaon and Noida recorded very poor air quality.

Ventilation index is the speed at which pollutants can get dispersed. A ventilation index lower than 6,000 sqm/second, with average wind speed less than 10 kmph, is unfavourable for dispersion of pollutants.
