Rockets to sign G Rivers

But Paul's absence wasn't a problem during Tuesday's Christmas showdown with the Oklahoma City Thunder in town, as James Harden powered Houston to a 113-109 win with a little late help from new addition Austin Rivers. The hope is that Paul will only miss a few weeks, and will be back at some point in January.

The Rockets had been linked to Rivers after he was waived by the Phoenix Suns on December 18.

The Rockets are having a hard season, having already lost 15 games.

Rivers began this season (his seventh in the NBA) with the Washington Wizards, playing in 29 games and averaging 7.2 points and 2.0 assists in 23.6 minutes per game. The big question is, can he turn it around with the Rockets?

The 26-year-old guard met with coach Mike D'Antoni on Saturday and the team finalised the deal on Sunday, confirming it the following day.

Houston is 1-5 without Paul this season. He may eventually become the player he once was, a guy who averaged almost 20 points a game, but for now, he is still rusty and not quite 100%. And not just as a replacement for Paul.

Will it be a similar story for Austin Rivers tomorrow on National TV against a rival team? Don't be surprised if it gets a bit worse before it gets better for the Houston Rockets.
