Ford recalling over 400,000 pickup trucks due to fire risk

Ford Motor Co said Friday it is recalling 874,000 pickup trucks in North America with engine block heaters for fire risks. Eventually, the damage can cause a short and trip breakers while it is plugged in.

The recall affects F-150 trucks from 2015-2019 built at plants in MI and Missouri and 2017-2019 F-series Super Duty vehicles built in Kentucky and Ohio.

Ford says water and contaminants can get into the engine block heater cable's splice connector, causing corrosion, damage and potentially fire.

Owners rely on the block heater to keep their engines warm so the vehicle starts properly in cold weather, CBS News reported.

There have been three reports of fire in Canada, but none so far in the U.S. The recall is expected to officially start on January 7. Thankfully, it has not learned of any injuries stemming from the problem.

The fire risk only exists when the truck is parked and the block heater cable is plugged into an electrical outlet, the report states.

"If there are no signs of damage or corrosion, dealers will apply dielectric grease to the splice connector and reconnect".

The recall affects 463,793 trucks in Canada and an additional 410,289 in the United States and its federal territories.
