Amazon Accidentally Sends Customer 100MB Of Someone Else's Private Voice Files

Perhaps you had one Echo in your living room and an Amazon Fire Stick connected to your TV.

Imagine if you had Amazon Alexa-enabled speakers all over your house.

Then one day, over 1,700 recordings of you speaking to Alexa are sent to a random person - and you don't even know about it until a magazine gets in touch.

Amazon is claiming that this situation was a simple case of human error and that it is putting mechanisms in place to prevent similar mishaps moving forward.

Amazon said it has "resolved the problem with the two affected customers and taken measures to further improve our procedures".

CT created a profile of the user and was able to identify the customer, his girlfriend, and some friends, using it. CT contacted the customer and he confirmed that his voice was on the recordings.

The company also told Reuters that it had contacted "the relevant authorities" as a "precautionary measures".

A German man was mistakenly sent Alexa voice recordings made by another user when he requested a copy of his own data from Amazon.

What's surprising here is that a human was involved at all in the retrieval of audio files by an Alexa user.

When a German Amazon customer requested his archived data to review, he received a link to 1,700 Alexa audio files that belonged to a complete stranger.

The audio files, which were in German, revealed private data about the person, including their first and last name, who their partner is, where they lived, and their taste in music.

It turns out, Amazon had not contacted him about the data breach, but after his story was about to become public, Amazon ended up giving him new Echo devices and a Prime membership by way of compensation, according to the report.

He reported the anomaly to Amazon, but the company did not immediately reply, except to delete the files.

End users of digital assistants should be aware that anything said in the vicinity of their devices can and will get uploaded to remote servers when they are active.

Amazon described the incident as an "isolated case" and put the mistake down to human error.

The report also showed sources noting that a hack of Amazon traced back to China likely exposed some customers' data.
