UK Government to Review E-Cigarette Regulations Post-Brexit

Besides the bad publicity that e-cigarettes are still subjected to, a TPD regulation banning sales of nicotine containing e-liquids above 20 mg/ml, has been making it hard for many smokers to switch to e-cigarettes.It is a known fact that when smokers first turn to vaping, they first start with higher doses of nicotine to match the hit they were getting from their cigarettes, and then proceed to wean themselves slowly in order to curb their addiction.

Twice as many high school students used nicotine-tinged electronic cigarettes this year compared with last year, an unprecedented jump in a large annual survey of teen smoking, drinking and drug use.

The survey found that the percentage of all high school students who used e-cigarettes has risen by a third over the past year. Perceived prevalence of vaping devices and liquids increased from 45.7 percent to 66.6 percent among teenagers since past year.

A new survey warns that teenage use of vaping devices has increased substantially in a single year.

Among 10th-graders, nicotine vaping climbed at a record rate - doubling from 8 percent to 16 percent. The news and stories that matter, delivered weekday mornings.

"Teens are clearly attracted to the marketable technology and flavorings seen in vaping devices", says Volkow.

"Intriguingly, when they go off to college or go to work, you see the highest rates of opioid use among 18 to 24 years of age".

When electronic cigarettes first took hold among US teens almost a decade ago, public-health experts fretted that the slick devices would lure a new generation of kids into tobacco use.

Among 12th-graders, the proportion of students who said they had vaped a nicotine product in the 30 days before they took the survey soared from 11 percent in 2017 to 20.9 percent in 2018.

"Also, perhaps educational campaigns about the high risk of overdoses that are associated with the use of these substances, and the high risk of addiction to these substances, all of these factors may have had a positive impact (on) teenagers".

"Increasingly relaxed regulations around marijuana are likely to push our nation's youth in a similar direction as we've seen with vaping", Richter said.

"Kids have been able to get their hands on and use them in ways that are a lot easier to use than a combustible cigarette", Kovall said.

Compton said more progress is needed, however.

The 2014 edition of the Monitoring the Future study was the first to report that vaping had replaced smoking as the most popular way for teens to consume tobacco.

Experts worry that the high nicotine content of vape products may be addicting a new generation of tobacco users.

There was a bit of good news in the report, with teens reporting decreased use of alcohol, tobacco and opioids.

Just 17.5 percent of 12th graders said they had been drunk in the past 30 days, down significantly from 26 percent in 2013, the survey showed. Fewer teens reported binge drinking (five or more drinks in a row). "Right now the number is more like 1.7 percent".

Students' growing attraction to vaping extended to marijuana, which increased by at least 50 percent across the board. While the devices are believed by many to be safer than traditional tobacco cigarettes, they are far from harmless.
