'Aladdin' First Look: Behold Will Smith's Genie

That all changed today (December 19) when Entertainment Weekly unveiled the first image of Will as the erstwhile lamp inhabitant, alongside newcomers Naomi Scott as Princess Jasmine and Mena Massoud as Aladdin.

One thing is clear, Disney fans have never had a friend like Will Smith's Genie.

Smith also added that this wouldn't be the only look we would see from the Genie.

Though some are tweeting out concern that Genie isn't blue in this batch of pictures, Smith took to Instagram to say he will, in fact, be blue.

Most importantly, we got our first look at Will Smith as the Genie. The question is always: Where was there meat left on the bone?

Numerous comments focus specifically on Smith's hair and skin colour - while his hair is an exact mimicry, the original animated Genie was blue-skinned - and it turns out people have strong opinions about this remake.

In the EW article, Smith also talked about this Genie, who will obviously be compared to Robin Williams's unforgettable version in the 1992 animated version of the film. His look is certainly a far cry from Robin Williams' blue mystical being, but that's much less questionable than the quotes from both Smith and Ritchie about how they're handling that character.

However it was Smith's Genie who has dominated the discussion on social media. Rather than completely redesigning the new Genie, BossLogic's piece simply colored him blue, and it's not the most flattering look one could imagine. "There hasn't been a lot of that hip-hop flavour in Disney history".

The film was directed by Guy Ritchie from a script he wrote with John August and Vanessa Taylor.

Do you think Will can live up to Robin's performance?

This morning, EW released several images of the upcoming Disney live-action film Aladdin.
