Geraint Thomas wins BBC Sports Personality of the Year 2018

While Geraint Thomas's victory in the main category made it another golden night for cycling, netball was the other conspicuous victor from last night's BBC Sports Personality of the Year show.

Welshman Thomas beat out Formula One world champion Lewis Hamilton and World Cup Golden Boot victor Harry Kane into second and third respectively. "It's been an fantastic year for British sport and long may it continue".

The annual BBC Sports Personality of the Year ceremony takes place in Birmingham this evening.

The annual TV show, which was shown live from Birmingham, saw Tour de France victor Geraint Thomas crowned the victor. I was just going down the local leisure centre going for a swim, then I end up riding a bike.

"I'm really lucky I came into cycling at the time I did.

Obviously, people want me to win, but hearing stories like Tyson (Fury)'s and Billy (Monger)'s, you realise that what we do does inspire people back home", Thomas said.

Thomas was a close second with the bookmakers but the 32-year-old Welshman came out on top when it mattered.

England's Gareth Southgate picked up the Coach of the Year award while Italian golfer Francesco Molinari was named "World Sport Star".

"I've got so many people to thank".

The other athletes short-listed for the award were triple European sprint champion Dina Asher-Smith, English cricket's record test wicket taker James Anderson and double Olympic skeleton champion, Lizzy Yarnold.

Thomas, who only found out last week that Sky would be ending their sponsorship of Team Sky at the end of the 2019 season, was handed the award by tennis legend Billie Jean King.

"Everyone involved with the Great Britain Cycling Team felt a sense of pride watching Geraint ride his way to Tour de France victory".
