USA resolution condemning Hamas over Israel fails at United Nations

The U.N. General Assembly voted on Thursday against a resolution sponsored by US ambassador Nikki Haley to condemn the Palestinian Hamas group as a terrorist organization.

The resolution fell short of the required two-thirds majority of the 193-member assembly to pass. The resolution ultimately picked up a plurality of 87 votes in support and 57 against - with 33 abstentions.

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo slammed the United Nations for rejecting his country's draft resolution. "The failure of the American venture at the United Nations represents a slap to the USA administration and confirmation of the legitimacy of the resistance", said Hamas spokesman Sami Abu Zahri.

The United States is working on a long-awaited plan to broker peace between Israel and the Palestinians, but the Palestinians are skeptical and have accused the Trump administration of siding with Israel on core issues.

Saudi Arabia's UN Ambassador Abdallah Al-Mouallimi, reflecting the Arab view, said the USA resolution would "undermine the two-state solution which we aspire to". The people who have suffered by far the most because of Hamas are the Palestinian people.

For the first time, a majority of United Nations member countries voted to condemn Hamas, but under General Assembly procedures, the measure failed to be officially approved.

Fatah vice chairman Mahmoud al-Aloul, vice chairman of Abbas's Fatah faction, called the resolution's failure to pass "a major Palestinian victory", in a comment posted on Fatah's official Facebook page.

"She stressed the fact that Hamas' charter "openly calls for the destruction of Israel" and uses a long list of "barbaric terrorist tactics including suicide bombers and thousands of rockets, flaming kites and balloons".

PLO Secretary-General Saeb Erekat pointed out that Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas and his ruling Fatah faction had played a role in thwarting the U.S. resolution.

It called for an end to Israel's occupation of Palestine including East Jerusalem, and affirmed support for a two-state solution based on pre-1967 borders. "Is the hatred toward Israel so strong that you'll defend a terrorist organization?" This was echoed by his counterpart with the Democratic Front for the Liberation of Palestine, Tala Abu Zarifa, who suggested that the failure to get the resolution adopted, "is a victory for global justice and the legitimacy of the Palestinian resistance".

Despite Riyadh's close ties to Washington, Saudi Arabia's ambassador to the UN Abdullah Al-Mouallimi urged member states to reject the USA measure.

"Your silence in the face of evil reveals your true colors", he said. Israel's idea of "truth" ("We will continue to fight for the truth!" tweeted Danon yesterday) is that it regards as an enemy anyone who does not support its killing of Palestinian civilians as they call for the implementation of their legitimate right to return to their land.

But the resolution that was voted on never mentioned a two-state solution or referred to Israeli actions against the Palestinians, which Ireland and others considered unbalanced.

Danny Danon, the Israeli envoy to the United Nations, scolded the states that rejected the resolution.

He said Washington has emboldened Israel to continue its "inhuman practices" against Palestinians in clear violation of global law. Israel's Ambassador Danny Danon told the assembly the vote had been hijacked by the procedural maneuver.

Haley rattled the United Nations when she arrived in January 2017 vowing that the United States will be "taking names" of countries that oppose Trump's foreign policy.
