Trump to Name State Department's Heather Nauert UN Ambassador

She would replace current ambassador Nikki Haley, who announced she is leaving the position at the end of this year.

The U.N. has had several female ambassadors from the U.S. The post is not always a Cabinet-level position.

Schaefer notes, though, that Trump already has a team in place that he relies on for help in crafting foreign policy -Pompeo and National Security Adviser John Bolton. "It is less clear that she has the experience to hammer out hard deals with China and Russian Federation over problems like Iran and North Korea". "Ambassador Haley was a far more high-level figure, particularly early in the administration". The officials were not authorized to speak publicly before Trump's announcement. The measure won a large majority, but not enough to secure the two-thirds needed for it to pass.

Relatively new in the political scene, analysts have now pointed at her lack of political and policy credentials which Haley, a former SC governor, possesses.

He added that colleagues described Nauert as a quick learner who "executed her functions capably". In turn, these played a role in weakening North Korea's weapons program, and persuading Kim Jong Un to take part in negotiations, she said.

"In that regard, probably they're not too upset to see Nikki Haley go because Haley was pretty independent compared to what we're likely to see from Nauert".

The State Department declined to comment and Nauert did not immediately respond to a request for comment. "I have great confidence in her".

Nauert won't face an easy confirmation given her lack of experience and the likelihood that she'll be asked to answer for the Trump administration's scorn for worldwide bodies, including the UN.

At the time, the tensions sparked fears the back-and-forth could trigger a war with North Korea after it tested missiles and nuclear weapons that it claimed could hit the U.S. However, Haley claimed Trump's rhetoric boosted her negotiating power at the United Nations and enabled her to pass three Security Council strict sanctions against North Korea.

Despite Nauert's TV savvy, however, current and former colleagues wonder if she will be prepared or equipped to navigate the gritty behind the scenes work of United Nations negotiations.

In that speech in Brussels, Pompeo questioned the value and credibility of organizations like the United Nations, the European Union, the International Monetary Fund and World Bank, saying they are in need of dire change if they are to continue to have US support or membership. She was subsequently named as the acting undersecretary for public diplomacy and public affairs in early 2018. Before joining the State Department she worked as an anchor for Fox News and correspondent for ABC News.
