Body found in Costa Rica thought to be missing Florida woman

Her death is now being investigated as a homicide. A local security guard was arrested and taken into custody in connection with her disappearance, officials said.

A meticulous search of the room she had stayed on her last night Costa Rica revealed traces of blood, despite the room had been cleaned by hotel staff and other guests had used the room since.

Investigators said they reviewed surveillance footage and spoke to witnesses who saw Stefaniak at various times and said they determined the contradictory statements the security guard gave to them were incompatible with evidence they found. "Exercise normal precautions in Costa Rica". He will spend at least the next three months behind bars. He maintained that the body still needed to be fingerprinted before they made an official announcement.

"We all remain very hopeful and very positive that she will be found alive and safe", he said.

Meanwhile, Stefaniak's family are now on their way to the Central American country.

Greg Zwolinski, a friend of the family, who was in Costa Rica trying to communicate with the authorities, said the family's requests had been rejected twice. "She's never been early for anything in her life she wouldn't leave to go to the airport at 5:30 a.m.", Burton said.

The family of a Miami woman, who went missing in Costa Rica, is going to the morgue to view a body found near her last known location. They also found blood in the room she occupied before disappearing.

That's where the missing woman and her sister-in-law April Antonieta were staying on a trip celebrating Stefaniak's 36th birthday.

Burton returned to the US after five days. "We will update everyone as soon as we know".

Carla Stefaniak, 36, went missing last week before sending an ominous text message to her sister-in-law.

Witnesses supposedly saw Stefaniak leaving the Airbnb around 5 a.m. with her luggage and getting into an unknown auto, according to the Miami Herald. "She is very active on social media, and for her, on the day of her birthday, to never log in to any of those accounts is just insane". The body was only half-buried in the ground and had been covered with plastic bags.

When she got there, she FaceTimed a friend.

"He said her phone died", Burton said last week, "and that was the last we heard from her".

In the video by Telemundo 51 and published on Crhoy.com, Carlos tells the camera, "Carla come back".

Burton told CBS News this week that a rainstorm appeared to knock out the power at Stefaniak's Airbnb.

Family members said this didn't add up.

Caicedo, Stefaniak's father, arrived in Costa Rica and was working with officials in the search.

"I just had a weird feeling even before I got to the airport", Jaime said. "You can't imagine how am I. Devastated".

Mario Caicedo, a brother of Stefaniak, Mario Caicedo, is in Costa Rica.

Authorities believe it was Stefaniak but have not officially identified the remains, they have said.
