The statement said Meng sought, and was granted, a publication ban which prevents the department from releasing further details about the arrest. U.S. and Canadian officials haven't said what charges Meng faces, but the U.S. Justice Department is investigating whether Huawei violated U.S. sanctions on Iran.

Huawei released a statement, noting that it "has been provided very little information regarding the charges and is not aware of any wrongdoing by Ms Meng".

'China has already made solemn representations to the United States and Canada, demanding they immediately correct their wrong behavior and restore Ms Meng Wanzhou's freedom'.

The renewed jitters over the implications that Meng's arrest could have on US-China trade negotiations weighed on big exporters on Thursday.

Earlier this year, the U.S. imposed a seven-year ban on the sale of crucial USA components to Chinese smartphone maker ZTE after finding it had failed to take action against staff who were responsible for violating trade sanctions against Iran and North Korea.

Huawei has said it complies with all applicable export control and sanctions laws and US and other regulations.

The company's website also lists Meng as its deputy chairwoman and The Associated Press reports that she is the daughter of company founder Ren Zhengfei.

It also produces consumer electronics and this year overtook Apple to become the second-largest manufacturer of smartphones in the world, behind Samsung Electronics.

Meng's arrest has "potentially huge implications" for the trade war and signals the United States government is willing to get tough on Chinese companies that do business with Iran, according to Michael Every, head of Asia-Pacific research at investment bank Rabobank.

"The arrest of a family member linked to Huawei's founder indicates how the tension between the two sides is rapidly escalating", said T.J. Pempel, a professor of political science at the University of California, Berkeley, who specializes in East Asian politics and economy. Meng, it said, was "not violating any American or Canadian law".

Several other past and present Skycom directors appear to have connections to Huawei.

The U.S. government has been concerned about Huawei for years because of uncertainty over its relationship with the Chinese government.

"We are full of confidence that China and the USA can reach an agreement within 90 days", the spokesman said Thursday.

A foreign ministry spokeswoman, Hua Chunying, said then that China hoped the U.S. would refrain from taking actions that could further undermine investor confidence in the U.S. business environment and harm its domestic economy.

Chinese officials have given no indication they are willing to change their economic or political system as a result of US demands.

Earlier this year, the USA imposed a seven-year ban on the sale of crucial United States components to Chinese smartphone maker ZTE after finding it had failed to take action against staff who were responsible for violating trade sanctions against Iran and North Korea. Over the weekend, President Trump had tweeted that he was suspending an increase in tariffs after reaching a deal with China.

Suspicions over Huawei's links to the Chinese government have made the company a target for suspicion and the USA has led the charge to ban its products and services.

While most of the focus during the conflict with China has been on Trump's tariffs, Meng's arrest is a reminder that the Trump administration's battles aren't confined to duties on goods.

Huawei is one of the world's largest telecommunications equipment and service providers.
