South Africa minister defends police over Beyonce concert chaos

Mandela was jailed under South Africa's apartheid regime for 27 years.

Beyonce and Jay Z took the stage on Sunday for a good cause.

Global Citizen Festival: Mandela 100 is a campaign partnership between advocacy group Global Citizen and the House of Mandela with hopes of ending poverty by 2030. The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation pledged $17 million towards the World Health Organisation to protect 20 million people from Neglected Tropical Diseases.

South African artists raised the bar quite high at the festival adding a local flavour to the worldwide line-up. Beyoncé fans rejoiced as their queen performed at the FNB Stadium, and those watching from home were treated to 25 minutes of Bee and Jay-Z before the live feed was cut.

The well known "kokomaster" delivered a proper show with songs like "Oliver Twist", "Fall in Love" and 'Emergency.' He also performed with the Mzazi Youth Choir.

Beyoncé among stars at Johannesburg concert to honour Mandela

Mandela was imprisoned for almost three decades for his fight against the apartheid regime.

Perhaps it's part of the ANC election campaign trail or honest words coming from President Cyril Ramaphosa but his message to the youth and upholding Madiba's values resonated with the youth crowds at the FNB stadium. In 2018, the Global Citizen Festival gathered the largest audience in the history of the event.

Speaking to the public broadcaster SABC from Port Elizabeth, Naidoo said that police had recorded one incident of mugging after the concert, and that the police will not be seeking CCTV footage from the petrol station as there have been no criminal cases reported except for one. "Some guys were walking around with knives and screwdrivers, threatening people", he said.

One witness, Namhla R., said she saw a woman fighting off a man who was mugging her.
