Delhi Daredevils renamed as Delhi Capitals

IPL franchise Delhi Daredevils have renamed themselves as Delhi Capitals ahead of the 12th edition of the tournament. The new logo, with three tigers on its emblem, has also been unveiled during the event.

Kiran Kumar Gandhi, CEO and MD at GMR Infrastructure, said, "We're sure this exciting partnership is going to do good for Delhi's IPL Team this season".

"We, at JSW Sports, are proud to be associated with the capital city of India and wanted our team, our players, our fans to wear that fact with pride", said Parth Jindal, co-owner and chairman, Delhi Capitals. Ahead of the 2019 IPL auctions, the Delhi Daredevils released former captain Gautam Gambhir and a host of global stars which include Jason Roy, Glenn Maxwell and Liam Plunkett, along with Indian paceman Mohammed Shami. There has also been a change of people handling Delhi- Sriram Srinath, who was with Sunrisers Hyderabad, has been hired to run the cricket operations.

The support staff of Delhi Capitals, to be led by Shreyas Iyer, would comprise of Ricky Ponting (head coach), Mohammad Kaif (assistant coach), James Hopes (bowling coach).

The change in name comes close on the heels of JSW Sports picking up a 50 percent stake in the franchise. They also released Gautam Gambhir, Mohammed Shami and Glenn Maxwell among others and go into the auction on December 18 in Jaipur with a purse of Rs. 25.50 crore. Shikhar Dhawan will join the side for this edition.

The team boasts of a battery of young Indian stars which include captain Shreyas Iyer, Rishabh Pant and Prithvi Shaw. It finishing at the bottom of the table in IPL 2018.
