Trump complains about cost of 'uncontrollable' arms race

In response to Russia's alleged violation of INF treaty, United States says it will suspend its obligations under a landmark nuclear treaty in 60 days.

Trump's comments follow earlier statements made by vice president of China operations at the US-China Business Council, Jacob Parker, that the outcome of the most recent meeting between Donald Trump and his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping would allow them to delay the possible further escalation of a trade war between the two countries, and to find long-term solutions for better bilateral relations.

Britain's chief of the defence staff, General Sir Nick Carter, has also said Russian Federation is in breach of the agreement - telling MPs "we need to call them out" for a deployment of "systems which break the 500km to 5,000km range". "It is now up to Russian Federation to preserve the INF Treaty".

Speaking to journalists after a meeting of Nato foreign ministers in Brussels, Pompeo outlined longstanding United States allegations of Russian violations of the cold war-era treaty with the development and deployment of a new ground-launched cruise missile, which he said was part of a wider pattern of lawlessness by the Kremlin.

On Aug. 24, Trump abruptly canceled a planned trip by U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo to Pyongyang blaming, in a tweet, a lack of "sufficient progress" in denuclearization, saying the trip would take place when the "trading relationship with China is resolved".

"But if Russia's doing it and if China's doing it and we're adhering to the agreement, that's unacceptable".

"I regret that we now most likely will see the end of the INF Treaty", NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg said, adding that "no arms control agreement will work if it is only respected by one party". While it would take a substantial length of time to develop an entirely new missile, existing medium-range weapons in the USA arsenal, like sea-launched Tomahawk cruise missiles, could be adapted for ground launch more quickly, arms expert said. Kyiv is seeking global support for its Black Sea confrontation with Russian Federation, though it was unclear what more North Atlantic Treaty Organisation would do beyond the sea patrols and air policing it already does in the region.

Klimkin welcomed the political support he received in Brussels, but said: "We shouldn't just stay on the level of declarations, however strong declarations are".

At the time, Trump said the increase in spending was to provide the USA military with resources "better than any military on earth".

Some European allies suspect that Trump could give notice in coming months that the U.S.is leaving the treaty.

Ukrainian officials have denied that the vessels were in Russian waters and they had the right to sail through the Kerch Strait.
