Iran Ballistic Missile Test Violates UN Resolution, Pompeo Says

The call comes as Secretary of State Mike Pompeo is to meet European officials in Brussels this week and after the USA and others condemned an Iranian missile launch over the weekend.

Iran on Saturday test-fired a missile capable of carrying multiple warheads, in violation of the 2015 nuclear deal with world powers, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said.

"We are acting to preserve, protect, and advance an open, just, transparent and free world of sovereign states", Pompeo said, adding that China's ability to benefit from the current USA -led system of trade and other agreements was an example of "the poisoned fruit of American retreat". "We will continue to both develop and test missiles. This is outside the framework of [nuclear] negotiations and part of our national security, for which we will not ask any country's permission", Shekarchi said.

Hook from DOS confirmed the missile tested by Iran over the weekend is capable of carrying a nuclear payload.

Washington's Iran special envoy Brian Hook insisted on Monday that despite Iran's assertions to the contrary, Iranian missile tests were not defensive in nature. "This provocative behaviour can not be tolerated". Pompeo's statement provided few details about the latest Iranian missile test.

He also rejected critics who suggest that President Donald Trump's administration is acting unilaterally on key worldwide issues.

The United States on Tuesday urged the UN Security Council to condemn Iran for carrying out a ballistic missile test, describing the launch as unsafe and a violation of a UN resolution.

Iran has long maintained that its missile program is defensive in nature, a stance generally supported by Russian Federation at the Security Council.

U.S. President Donald Trump pulled out of an worldwide nuclear agreement in May and reimposed sanctions on the Islamic Republic, criticizing the deal for not including curbs on Iran's development of ballistic missiles.

At a presentation on Thursday, Brian Hook, the United States special representative on Iran, attacked the US's European allies, saying that since leaving the deal U.S. officials had found "freedom and leverage" to tackle Iran's regional influence, and he chided other nations for not getting on board.

Russia, he said, is violating key arms control treaties and undermining the sovereignty of its neighbors, while Iran is flouting U.N. Security Council resolutions.

Since then, Washington has imposed "toughest ever" sanctions against Iran.

Hook said US discussions with the Europeans about missile sanctions are gaining traction.

Launch of an Iranian Emad missile - a precision-guided, intermediate-range ballistic missile.

Nevertheless, referring to the recent test, U.S. National Security Adviser John Bolton wrote on Twitter on Saturday, "This provocative behavior can not be tolerated".

Actually, that was one of the biggest deficiencies in the nuclear deal - that it didn't cover Iran's ballistic missile program.
