Former US president George HW Bush dies

Shortly after the Bush family announced the passing of former president George H.W. Bush, the Obamas marked the passing of Bush 41 with a heartfelt tribute to the man they called a "patriot and humble servant". His son George W. Bush later took over the White House, serving as President for two terms from 2001 to 2009.

George Herbert Walker Bush served just one term as U.S. president, but few occupants of the Oval Office could have felt history shifting so sharply under their feet.

The elder Bush saw his popularity swell with the United States' success in the Gulf War in 1991, only to watch it evaporate in a brief but deep recession.

Bush violated his no-new-taxes promise in the second year of his term, cutting a deficit-reduction deal that angered many congressional Republicans and contributed to GOP losses in the 1990 midterm elections.

He was the 41st USA president between 1989 and 1993, after serving two terms as vice-president to Ronald Reagan.

Bush was the patriarch of a political dynasty that included one son who served as president, another as a governor and a grandson who now holds statewide office in Texas.

Bush died at 10.40pm CT on Friday, his office confirmed in a statement.

US President Donald Trump has issued a statement, expressing condolences, and praising late Bush's "unflappable leadership", as well as the Republican politician's "authenticity, disarming wit, and unwavering commitment to faith, family and country".

On Tuesday, McGrath tweeted that Bush had been visited by former President Obama that day while the 44th president was visiting Houston.

His death, announced by his press secretary, comes eight months after his wife, Barbara Bush, died.

"Our thoughts are with the entire Bush family tonight - and all who were inspired by George and Barbara's example".

He was a World War II aviator and Texan oil tycoon before entering politics in 1964 as a Republican.

In 1992, Bush lost his re-election bid to Clinton - whose aide coined the now famous slogan "It's the economy, stupid" - as eccentric third-party candidate Ross Perot syphoned off conservative votes.

His father, Prescott Bush, the son of an OH steel magnate, made his fortune as an investment banker and later served 10 years as a senator from CT.

He added that Mr Bush's extensive record of public service was rare, with his years in the military, in USA congress, the United Nations, China, the Central Intelligence Agency and as vice president and president.

Bush had a pampered upbringing and attended the prestigious Phillips Academy in Andover, but delayed his acceptance to Yale in order to enlist in the US Navy on his 18th birthday and head off to war.

"As so many Americans did, I had true affection for the man George Bush", he said in a statement.

Mrs Bush died in April 2018.

He flew combat missions from the aircraft carrier USS San Jacinto and won the Distinguished Flying Cross.
