Israel military says to expose Hezbollah attack tunnels from Lebanon

The attack tunnels have always been rumored to have been dug from southern Lebanon into Israeli territory by the Iran backed terror group, but Israeli defense officials repeatedly either denied their existence or refused to discuss it.

The operation in the Meluta area will target an unspecified number of tunnels that were not ready to be used, said Lt. Col. Jonathan Conricus, a spokesman for the IDF, according to The Jerusalem Post.

In September, the IDF unveiled eleven kilometers of what is planned to be a 130 kilometer defensive wall stretching the length of the Lebanon-Israel frontier, equipped with cameras in the hope of thwarting any attempt by its enemy Hezbollah to infiltrate and attack.

The situation appeared calm on the Lebanese side of the border where United Nations peacekeepers and Lebanese troops were deployed as usual, a Reuters journalist there said.

There was no immediate comment from Hezbollah and its Al-Manar TV did not make any mention of the Israeli operation.

As early as 2006, the IDF discovered that Hezbollah was building tunnels into its territory from Lebanon, an activity which only increased after the Second Lebanon War.

The Israeli operation comes hours after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu held a last- minute trip to Brussels to meet US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo.

Israel launches military operation against 'Hezbollah tunnels'

This picture taken on December 4, 2018 near the northern Israeli town of Metula, shows Israeli soldiers standing outside a military vehicle near the border with Lebanon.

The operation was announced on Tuesday by the Israeli military on Twitter. Manelis said the Lebanese Armed Forces is not capable of controlling what occurs in southern Lebanon.

The IDF added that it had "enhanced its presence and readiness in the Northern Command and is prepared for various scenarios". Israel's border with Lebanon has been relatively quiet in the years since, but Israel has continued to identify the Shiite militant group and its expanding weapons cache of tens of thousands of rockets as a major threat.

He said an upcoming security challenge would require Israelis to "endure sacrifice".

The IDF Spokesperson pointed the finger at "the Hezbollah terror organization, which is behind the digging of the tunnels, and continues to operate with Iranian support and funding in order to establish its terrorist activity against Israeli citizens".

Israel has warned that another war with the group is likely and has said it will use massive military force in any new fight.
